The University of Camerino is one of the most ancient university in Italy authorised by the Pope Gregorio XI to give doctorates and bachelor degrees from 1377. The University has a strong commitment to doctoral training and internationalization. From 2005 the School of Advanced Studies at UNICAM promotes structured doctoral courses with high level of internationalization and collaborative interaction with industries. The main research interests of the Cell biology and Biotechnology laboratory at the School of Biosciences and Veterinary Medicine of UNICAM are: 1-molecular cold adaptation; 2-functional role of tubulin isotypes; 3-characterization of enzymes for industrial application. All these research topics are addressed using ciliates as model organisms. This unit has important relationships and collaborations at both national and international level, such as the Gladishev group from the Harvard Medical School. Techniques routinely applied are: ciliates cultivation, DNA/RNA isolation, gene cloning and sequencing, quantitative Real-Time PCR, Tetrahymena cell transfection, fluorescent microscope analysis, gene-silencing by RNA interference, heterologous expression of protein in bacteria.
